Canyon County Probate Court
Probate in Canyon County is not handled by a separate probate court. The research file identifies probate, guardianship, conservatorship, and related proceedings as matters handled through the Magistrate Division of the District Court. That means a Canyon County probate case uses the same court system and clerk channels as other local trial-court files. The public search path runs through Idaho iCourt, while official copies are requested from Canyon County Clerk Court Operations.
Probate cases may include wills, petitions for informal or formal probate, appointment of a personal representative, letters testamentary or letters of administration, inventories, creditor notices, accountings, objections, petitions for distribution, estate-closing documents, trust registrations, renunciations, guardianship cases, and conservatorships. Estate files often have more public access than guardianship or conservatorship records because those cases can involve minors, incapacitated adults, medical facts, protected addresses, and financial identifiers.
The Idaho Court Assistance Office is a useful forms and self-help starting point for probate-adjacent filings. Canyon County probate record copies still come from the local clerk, not from the self-help portal.

That statewide forms source supports Canyon County probate users, but the filed probate case and copy request remain with the Magistrate Division and Clerk Court Operations.
Canyon County Probate Terms
Probate records use terms that are easy to mix up. A short glossary helps when reading an iCourt entry or a copy of an order from the Canyon County Clerk. These definitions are plain-language labels only; the court order controls the legal effect in a specific case.
- Testator
- The person who made a will.
- Executor
- A person named in a will to carry out estate duties. Idaho records may also use personal representative.
- Intestate
- A death without a valid will, which means the estate follows statutory inheritance rules.
- Guardianship
- A court appointment that gives a person authority to make care or personal decisions for a minor or incapacitated adult.
- Conservatorship
- A court appointment that gives a person authority over another person's financial affairs.
Search Canyon County Probate Records
Use Idaho iCourt or the Tyler Odyssey portal to search public probate case status by party, decedent, protected person, or case number when that information is public. The portal can show case status, events, hearings, and some public document access depending on the case and access level. It will not show sealed cases, sealed event entries, or material exempt under Idaho Court Administrative Rule 32.
- Start with the statewide court portal and choose Smart Search for a case-status search.
- Search by a decedent, party, personal representative, guardian, conservator, or case number if known.
- Review the register of actions for probate filings, appointment orders, hearings, accountings, and distribution entries.
- If a specific document is needed, use the Canyon County Court Records Request process with case number, parties, document names, and dates.
- For audio, give the hearing date. Canyon County says no audio recordings are available before 2006.
- Have photo ID ready if the requested material is exempt from public disclosure under ICAR 32.
The Court Assistance Office also maintains a statewide forms page. The manifest image below is sourced from the Idaho Court Assistance Office forms page.
Forms can help a self-represented person understand filing options, but Canyon County probate records are searched in iCourt and copied through the Clerk Court Operations request process.
Canyon County Probate Contacts
Canyon County probate filings and probate record copies route through the courthouse case-records office. The Clerk's Court Operations office provides clerical support for the courts and maintains civil, criminal, juvenile, traffic, probate, divorce, and docket-copy requests. The Recorder may hold deeds or recorded instruments that affect estate property, but the Recorder is not the custodian of the probate case file.

What Canyon County Probate Records Show
A public Canyon County probate record may show the case number, court location, case type, party names, filing date, judicial officer, docket events, hearing dates, appointment orders, letters, inventories, accountings, creditor-related filings, objections, distributions, and case-closing entries. Guardianship and conservatorship cases may show the public-facing case status while withholding sensitive medical, financial, address, or minor-related material.
Probate documents are different from vital records and recorded land records. A death certificate or marriage certificate comes from a vital records channel. A deed or recorded instrument comes from the Recorder. A probate order, letter of appointment, or estate accounting comes from the court case file. If a probate matter affects real property, a user may need both the court file and Recorder records, but the offices serve different functions.
Note: Use the court case file for probate orders and the Recorder for deeds or recorded instruments tied to estate property.
Restricted Canyon County Probate Records
Idaho Court Administrative Rule 32 governs access to judicial records, including Canyon County probate records. Public estate filings may be available, but sealed records and case-event entries sealed under ICAR 32 do not appear in public portal results. Orders to seal that accompany a sealed record may remain public, so the docket can sometimes show that a restriction exists without showing the sealed material.
Guardianship, conservatorship, adoption, mental-health, child-related, and incapacitated-person material can be restricted or redacted. Personal identifiers, protected financial details, medical information, and minor information may also be limited. A requester who needs restricted probate material may have to provide photo ID, proof of authority, or a court order through the Canyon County Clerk's request process. The safe approach is to search iCourt first, then ask Clerk Court Operations what proof is required for the exact document.
